I first created this blog to observe typography in the world when I was taking a Typography course in 2012. I will be using this blog again to track graphic design that catch my eye observations during my GSD 108 course at Parkland College.

Beach Boys Live in London
This is an old Beach Boys record cover. Many different typefaces were used on this album cover. In its entirety, it looks like a bulletin board with postcards, pictures, a pin, and the title of the album looks like a torn newspaper article. This travel log theme is appropriate because the Beach Boys were overseas when they recorded this live album in London. The color of the majority of this album is subdued allowing the sans serif capitalized BEACH BOYS '69 in solid black to stand out as well as the orange "London" which also has shadowing to help it protrude from the postcard's orange background. I thought the use of a handwritten typeface was an effective touch.
MTD Bus Ad - Common Ground Food Co-op
These are a few examples of the internal MTD campus bus ads that Common Ground Food Co-op will be running this spring. The message is in a sans serif typeface called Knockout, all caps. The typeface of the "common" in the logo is serif typeface Ziggurat. I enjoy the witty and playful tone of the ads. The message really stands out bold and crisp against the solid green background. The first part of the message - the statement or question - is differentiated from the punchline by color, allowing the reader to easily distinguish the pun and digest the humor. The text in the logo is wrapped around the state, while the message is alined left and the store description lines are alined right with periods after each statement. This ad feels fresh - likely what the designer was aiming for because the Co-op sells food and is particularly known for selling a wide selection of fresh local and organic produce.

ITC Korinna - Description
Korinna is a German serif typeface that was released by the H. Berthold AG type foundry in 1904 during the Art Nouveau period of bold and disproportional shapes and nature inspired forms. Ed Benguiat and Vic Caruso brought this font back to life for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC) in 1974.This font was named after an ancient Greek female poet, Corinna, whose eloquently spoken words and beauty made her a muse to other ancient authors. This typeface has a playful and whimsical nature, and is widely used in advertisements, novel covers.
